Three of the 15 crew members were killed in the explosion. The Albanian Coast Guard responded and was able to save the remaining 12 crew members on board. Edirne sank after the explosion releasing some pollution.

The cause of the explosion was not known, but a report stated that the smoke had been seen shortly before the explosion.
